Cyberduck: an all-in-one FTP, Amazon S3, WebDAV, Cloud Storage, and Google Documents desktop client

Cyberduck: an all-in-one FTP, Amazon S3, WebDAV, Cloud Storage, and Google Documents desktop client:

CyberDuck-Screenshot2FTP has been impressively resilient as a file storage protocol, but these are the days where files are literally everywhere, in cloud storage, Google docs, and the like.

Enter Cyberduck: a free, open source desktop client that can access your FTP, WebDAV, and cloud storage accounts from a single, nicely designed application. It can access multiple cloud storage accounts like Amazon S3, Google Storage, Rackspace Cloud Files, Windows Azure and Google Documents.

Freewaregenius 5-Star PickCyberduck works on both Windows and Mac.

Here are some pros and cons:

PROS:

  • Supports many protocols: FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, SSH, Amazon S3, Google Storage, Windows Azure, Rackspace Cloud Files and even Google Docs. Works with third party providers using either the S3 or Openstack APIs.

  • Nice GUI: supports drag and drop, and is quite attractive. A nice context menu that contains a lot of functions, including the ability to quickly grab the HTTP URLs of a selected file in, including CDN and S3 URLs.

  • Default editor for Windows: lets users define which text editor to use in Windows.

  • Other functions: compress/expand TAR ZIP remotely, encrypts passwords, directory synchronization, drop-down access to recently accessed or bookmarked servers.

CONS:

  • Dual pane layout: to have as an option would be nice; I know some users like this.

  • Windows Explorer integration: in the send-to menu, would be nice.

  • Support for MaxCDN: would be nice (or, if that in fact is possible with some tweaking of the current version, someone please tell me how to do it).

The verdict: the combination of cloud storage/Google docs support and an amazing looking GUI make this software a winner as far as I am concerned. It may even Knock WinSCP off it’s spot on my Freeware Top 30 list; stay tuned!
