As the life cycle of Apple’s iOS has developed, there seems to be more and more emphasis on massive 3D games that rival the DS and the PSP. This is fine, I enjoy games like Nova, Real Racing and Modern Combat as much as anyone else. That said, there is something to be said for the subtle enjoyment of sitting down, relaxing and playing a simple puzzle game on my portable device.
Sometimes I want to keep the action and adventure games on my home console, and keep my portable games to the more simple things. These three puzzle games are simple yet addictive. They are the kinds of games that are easy to pick up for a few minutes and put down. However, it is also possible to sit and play them for long stretches of time because they can suck you in. Puzzle games also get your brain working. Sure, you are having fun playing a game, but at the same time, you are keeping your brain active.
Bubble Bust Free
Bubble Bust is a very solid puzzle game. It, like many puzzle games, involves setting up combos by matching items of the same color. The gameplay is similar to Snood, in that you are shooting the balls at the cluster of pieces on the board.
The idea is to match the largest groups before the screen pushes all the way down. If this happens, you lose and are forced to restart the level. The goal is to get the key at the end of the level and move on to the next one.
This game is interesting because of the patterns of the levels. Each one is preset, and tuned for difficulty. It can actually become very challenging when you get to the later levels, and that is where the game becomes addictive. I wanted to give up on the hard levels, but I just could not bring myself to do so.
Ponon! Free
Ponon! is similar to the godfather of all puzzle games, a little gem called Tetris. There are bricks that fall from the top of the screen, and you are trying to make rows to eliminate pieces. This formula will be familiar to anyone who plays many puzzle games.
You are probably wondering why I would feature a game that sounds so much like a Tetris rip-off. First, there is enough new and different stuff to make this game a standout. In addition, the presentation is so good that I do not really care if some of its core game play is borrowed.
There are two modes in the game, the first is called Classic and the second Adventure. In Classic mode, you are faced with constantly falling bricks, and you are trying to survive and rack up as many points as possible. In adventure mode, you play through a pre-constructed level and try to clear it below the goal line in as little time as possible. Between these two modes, there is a lot of game play in Ponon!
Bejeweled Blitz
It’s hard to talk about puzzle games without talking about the king of the “match three” genre, Bejeweled. They have a choke-hold on this type of game, and that is because they keep it simple, and they do it right. Blitz is a free Bejeweled game that is built for quick bursts of play. It is a game of simply getting as many points as you can in one minute.
What makes this game fun is the Facebook integration. Once you synchronize the game with Facebook, it will show you your friends best scores after each one-minute game. I am a super competitive person, so this kept me coming back and trying to best them. Sadly, I could not because one of my friends had over 800,000 points.
The franticness of having only one minute adds a lot of fun to the game. You have to make every move count, and this makes your brain think in a different way. In addition, it is perfect if you do not have a lot of time to play. You can fire it up, just play one or two rounds, and still have a satisfying experience.
